This is a photograph of the group of youngsters who participated in the wild pony races held during Saturday’s rodeo. They were photographed with the bull fighter, who while dressed in colourful garb, is the man who attempts to take the bull’s attention away from the rider.

Kassidy Petruk of Kamsack carried the Canadian Flag at the opening ceremony of the Kamsack rodeos on the weekend.

Often getting away from the bull one just attempted to ride is the difficult part of the event.

Several female competitors raced around three barrels in attempts to do it in the shortest time.

Two cowboys with lassoes rode out of the chute with a steer and while one roped the steer’s horns the other attempted to rope its hind feet in the team roping event.

A cowboy would drop from his horse onto a racing steer in an attempt to wrestle it to the ground in the steer wrestling events.

Youngsters from the audience were provided with vests and helmets so that in groups of three they were able to tackle the wild ponies. As one held a rope, the other the pony, the third would attempt to climb onto the animal’s back and ride it as far down the arena as he or she was able.

In the tie down roping event, the cowboy first races after a calf, lassoes it, forces it to the ground and ties three of its legs together. It is a timed event.
