The Kamsack Atom Flyers team hosted its home tournament, with six teams in attendance, from January 31 to February 2.
Joining the Flyers were the Canora Cobras, Roblin Stars, Churchbridge Imperials, Yorkton Medicine Shoppe Terriers, and the Yorkton Richardson Terriers, according to Shaun Lawless, coach.
One game was played on January 31, with the host Kamsack Flyers falling to the Canora Cobras.
“A number of games took place all day Saturday, with a skills competition being held before the last game of the evening,” Lawless said. “The different categories were fastest skater, stickhandling, hardest shot, and then a shootout to determine top scorer and top goaltender.”
The winners were as follows: Cash Kitzul of Roblin, fastest skater; Liam Van Caeseele of Churchbridge, stickhandling; Zach Rolland of Roblin, hardest shot; Rhys Lawless of Kamsack, top scorer, and Charlie Wlock of Yorkton Richardson Terriers, top goaltender.
“The skills competition was quite the event, as it was talked about in the rink throughout the Sunday (February 2) as well. All the kids enjoyed it and it was something unique for them at their age group.
“Throughout the weekend, the lobby was full and buzzing. The kids playing in the tournament, along with their older and younger siblings, enjoyed the time spent in the rink. The raffle table was a hit, with numerous items and baskets donated by local companies.”
A few of the prizes included: items for the baskets as well as a tablet, donated by Irondeal Ag.; T-shirts for games’ stars and hockey stick for the “loonie stick,” Sas-Kam Sportsman; wireless headsets and headwear, Kamtronics, and an autographed Patrick Laine, Winnipeg Jets jersey donated by Northern Mat & Bridge.
“Games continued Sunday with the A, B, and C finals. The Kamsack Flyers came up short in a loss to the Yorkton Medicine Shoppe Terriers,” said Lawless. “In the B final, the Roblin Stars skated to a win over the Canora Cobras. The tournament championship went to the Yorkton Richardson Terriers in a fast, hard fought game over the Churchbridge Imperials.
“Overall, it was a successful weekend in which all of the kids enjoyed themselves and made memories to last a lifetime. The coaches, manager, and parent volunteers put in a lot of effort to make it successful and ensure the kids had fun!” Lawless concluded.
