Twenty-seven athletes participated in the peewee/bantam football program for Grades 5 to 8 this spring. The Spartan football team began practicing during the last week of April until the middle of June.

“We participated in a jamboree in Melfort on June 9 which was very well organized,” said Tyler Lorenzo, coach. “Other coaches were very impressed with our sportsmanship which is very important to the Spartan program.”

“Our peewee team (Grades 5 and 6) won all three games: Melfort (40-24), Hafford (48-24) and Prince Albert (42-18). Our athletes were dominant on the field. Our offense was a powerhouse. “Touchdowns were scored by Ty Thomas, Bobby Taylor, Hunter Chernoff, Justus Blackwood, and Levi Erhardt. These touchdowns were made possible due to great blocking from Levi Erhardt, Brody Bloudoff, and Lee Tomkulak. It really helped having a veteran offense that works hard and is committed while also teaching a younger running back, Bobby Taylor, the ins and outs of our offense.

“Our defense was also dominant. We had some big plays made, including an interception by Justus Waugh which gave the players more confidence as the day went on.

The bantam team (Grades 7 and 8) fell short in their games against Prince Albert 1, Prince Albert 2 and Wakaw losing by 2 or 3 touchdowns each time.

“I cannot stress enough that this isn’t because of lack of talent,” Lorenzo said. “Touchdowns were scored by Will Zarchikoff, Brady Hilton, and Austin Krawetz. Our Bantam team consists of mostly Grade 7 athletes that are going to mature into dominant players, especially under leadership from our older football players.

“Our quarterback has only been training at this position for 3 weeks and looked confident running the offense. Our running backs and receivers are the bread and butter of the offense. We have great talent back here who can run hard, break tackles, and catch in all situations.

“I’d like to thank my co-head coach Michael Woollard for his dedication and time put into running our defense,” Lorenzo said. “We also had some great student coaches that allowed us to run more drills at practice. I would like to thank Zachary Chernoff, Nicholas Bielecki, Joshua Jaqueca, and Aidan Broda for giving back to the program. Coach Zachary Chernoff also came to the Melfort Jamboree and helped coach our athletes and provide feedback to the players.”
