Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten family engagement looking for donations

The Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes at Victoria School participate in monthly opportunities for families to come to the school for events and activities that they can enjoy together.

In September the classes came to the school for a scrapbooking event, where children and families together had the opportunity to make photo albums of the students, their family members and other special people and places in their lives, said Chantel Kitchen, teacher. These albums are being kept in the children’s classrooms, in their book area, for the children to enjoy while at school.

“The students have enjoyed sharing their albums with their friends at school. Having pictures of themselves and their families at school is a great way for the children to being able to see themselves in the classroom environment and impacts their social emotional development,” she said

“In past years we have solicited community members to lead activities (yoga, art classes, coaching, performances, etc.) We have also approached organizations, such as Affinity Credit Union, for financial funding. This year we will be looking for donations from community members for our December event for a ‘PreK/Kinder Christmas Store.’

“We will be setting up a store for the children in our programs to shop at for their family members. Children will come with a list of family members and will be able to ‘shop’ at the store for presents for those special people in their lives. A gift wrapping station will then be set up so that they can take their special purchases home to surprise their loved ones at Christmas,” she said.

“For the store we will be looking for donations of: gifts (new or gently used items), wrapping paper, money (for the purchase of new items for the store) and volunteer time (to assist children in finding the perfect items for their family members).

“We would like to see a variety of items donated that will please all family members (moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandmas, grandpas, etc.) Items such as: toys, jewelry, books, golf balls, tools, hand soaps and stationary are appreciated. If you have new or gently used items or wrapping supplies you would like to donate, or would like to volunteer at our store in December, please contact Victoria School and speak to one of the PreK/kindergarten teachers (Chantel Kitchen, Kendra Simon and Kelly Lambert.)

“We will be accepting donations for the store at the school during the month of November.  While we are starting this store as a PreK/Kinder project, we are hoping, that if successful it can be expanded to the rest of the school in the future.

“In October we will be having a Halloween carnival and potluck lunch with our families at the OCC Hall,” Kitchen said.
