Togo and Norquay residents among 16 recipients of health grants

One resident each from Togo and Norquay were among the 16 applicants who received a total of $16,545 that was awarded by The Health Foundation and TD Bank Financial Group in their fall education awards for 2016.

One resident each from Togo and Norquay were among the 16 applicants who received a total of $16,545 that was awarded by The Health Foundation and TD Bank Financial Group in their fall education awards for 2016.

Applications are considered twice each year and awards are given each spring and fall, said a release from The Health Foundation.

Annually, The Health Foundation’s Scholarship Fund awards at least $24,000 a year to help further the training and education of health care staff in east central Saskatchewan, the release said. The TD Bank Financial Group contributes $12,000 annually to fund 50 per cent of the awards.

This is the 16th consecutive year TD has partnered with The Health Foundation, making a very significant investment in local health care through this education program, it said. This brings the total contribution of TD Bank Financial Group to $170,000 for the Education Awards. Since this education program began there have been 374 awards totaling $350,486.

“TD Bank Financial Group is committed to investing in the future of this region by helping to ensure that nurses and other caregivers have access to funds to upgrade their skills and further their education,” said Les Arnelien, branch manager with TD Canada Trust. “We are pleased that TD Bank Financial Group is presenting seven awards today, with all of the awards going to people in various nursing programs.

“These awards will help the individuals pursue their education aspirations and improve their clinical skills and the knowledge they bring to their job working with patients.”

Loretta Erhardt of Togo, who is working towards a bachelor of nursing degree, and Candice Nelson of Norquay, who is studying social work, are two of the seven recipients of The Health Foundation’s scholarship awards.

The others are: Emma Kristjanson of Foam Lake, who is in diagnostic medical sonography; Bettina Sies of Yorkton, CT Imaging; Kyla Fraser, a speech pathologist in the Children’s Therapy program, taking an advanced speech pathology course called It Takes Two to Talk; Joanne Stromberg of Yorkton, who is taking a health information management Course, and Lacey Barker of Yorkton, who was presented an award to purchase select papers from the 44th clinical aphasiology conference.

The recipients of TD Bank Financial Group’s scholarship awards are: Cristina Bermejo of Yorkton,  nursing re-entry program; Christine Bermejo of Yorkton, taking a bachelor of science in nursing degree; Paige Fogg of Invermay, bachelor of science in nursing; Kelly Gabriel of Yorkton, currently an EMT taking a practical nursing program; Tera Walsh of Bredenbury, taking a post-RN bachelor of nursing degree; Amanda Skiba of Melville, bachelor of science in nursing, and Arla Thompson of Yorkton, post-RN bachelor of nursing.

In addition The Health Foundation awards were granted for: therapeutic recreation, to put on a workshop for all therapeutic recreation staff in the health region, and the therapies department to put on course called Introduction to Myofacial release. The course is for therapists throughout the health region and should provide benefit to both patients and practitioners, the release said.
