Richardson Pioneer has donated $50,000 to the Norquay Communiplex to help with needed upgrades including insulation for the skating rink’s ceiling and walls.

On April 5, Dallas Harrison, director of operations in Canora for Richardson Pioneer, and Mich Koroluk, an area marketing representative for Richardson Pioneer, presented the cheque to Mayor Don Tower and Maggie Lukey, a volunteer with the Norquay Communplex.

After installing new LED fluorescent lights, the Norquay Communiplex is now tasked with raising funds to insulate the rink to protect the new lights from dripping condensation, said a release from Richardson. The insulation will also lengthen the rink’s usability and helps keep the ice conditioner in better condition.

The Communiplex is home to many programs and teams including a CanSkate program, power skating, men’s and women’s hockey teams and sledge hockey, it said. The Communiplex is a hub for Norquay’s population of 500 and many others in surrounding communities.

“We have five to 10 people who volunteer their time to maintain the ice surface throughout the winter,” said Maggie Lukey, member of the Norquay Communiplex committee. “This past winter we were able to insulate the ceiling with blow-in insulation to help keep the ceiling from dripping on the ice surface and to help keep the building warm.

“With this donation and the hard work from our community, we will reach our goal of fixing and maintaining our skating rink.

Donations are made possible through the Richardson Foundation, the giving arm of James Richardson & Sons, Limited, and affiliated companies, the release said. In 2015, Richardson donated over $1.65 million to support 70 community projects and organizations across Canada. Richardson is proud to help support initiatives that have demonstrated support and funding from the local community.

“At Richardson Pioneer, we want to ensure that all the young children in Norquay and the surrounding communities can use this facility for years to come,” said Dallas Harrison, director of operations for Richardson Pioneer in Canora. “It is important for us to give back to the communities that continue to support our business.”

Richardson International is Canada’s largest agribusiness and is recognized as a global leader in agriculture and food processing, the release said. Based in Winnipeg, Richardson is a worldwide handler and merchandiser of all major Canadian-grown grains and oilseeds and a vertically-integrated processor and manufacturer of oats and canola-based products.

One of Canada’s Best Managed Companies, Richardson has over 2,500 employees across Canada and the U.S.
