Purchasing a Summer Solstice Lottery ticket will help bring a dentist to the clinic in Kamsack

Now is a great opportunity for area residents who want to see a dentist practicing in Kamsack to do their part so that it will happen.

The Assiniboine Valley Health and Wellness Foundation, which oversees the operation of the Assiniboine Valley Health Centre is conducting the Summer Solstice Lottery with the objective of raising funds so that an as-yet unused portion of the Health Centre can be constructed and furnished to the specifications of a dentist.

Tickets for the lottery are $20 each or three for $50 and a draw for a prize of $20,000 will be made June 23.

The Foundation has completed the first phase of its mandate, which was the construction of the Health Centre and the second phase is for a dentist in the building, said Kamsack Councillor Claire Bishop, who is chair of the Foundation. The third phase will be to raise funds for an optometrist to occupy space in the building.

“We’re in talks with a dentist who will be able to locate in Kamsack as soon as we get a space ready,” Bishop said last week.

“We’ve already sold about half the tickets for the lottery,” she said, adding that the odds of winning are incredibly good, better than any other lottery.

The Foundation board has agreed it will only conduct one major fundraising appeal each year and for 2017, the Summer Solstice Lottery is it, she said, urging residents to purchase their tickets.

Regarding the Foundation’s work to secure a medical doctor to succeed Dr. Emmanuel Ogali, who said he will be leaving Kamsack in September, Bishop said that members of the Foundation are confident that a successor has been found who is now in the accreditation process.

Everyone was invited to attend the annual general meeting of the Foundation which was held yesterday (June 7).
