A Grade 10 student of Norquay School will be attending the U of S (University of Saskatchewan) high school select band from January 31 to February 2.

Alexa Olson will be going to Saskatoon to the University of Saskatchewan Department of Music to participate in the High School Select-Wind Orchestra project.

It is an opportunity for some of Saskatchewan’s most promising high school-aged students to work with the outstanding and award-winning faculty in an intensive and hands-on educational environment; this project allows students to work, create, interact and network with other highly motivated people of similar age and similar musical interests.

Earlier this fall, Olson had attended the provincial honour band from October 31 to November 2 in Regina.

To be accepted to play with the honour groups, approximately 60 students in Grades 9 to 12 from across Saskatchewan are selected each year based off blind auditions. If selected, they have the opportunity to learn from world-class guest conductors while connecting with other musicians from across the province.

This is the highest level of band a high school student can achieve. It is similar to qualifying for provincials in a sport.
