A ceremony was held to install the newly-elected officers of the Kamsack branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

On January 8 Legion members met at the Legion Hall for a swearing-in ceremony.

A banquet supper was held, prior to the ceremony, allowing members to enjoy salads, ham and trimmings. The dessert table offerings included butter tarts with bacon as an ingredient.

The ceremony began with the installation of Ray Muir as sergeant-at-arms by Jim Woodward.

For each subsequent swearing-in, Muir announced the newly-elected member, and he or she was sworn in by Woodward.

Karen Tourangeau was sworn in as vice president; Linda Griffitts, secretary; John Adamyk, treasurer; Bob Stoyand, service officer; Janet Woodward and Bob Stoyand, branch trustees, and  Audrey Girling, Jean Woodward and Carol Stoyand, comrades.

Karen Tourangeau then proceeded with the installation of Jim Woodward as Legion president.

In a “state of the Legion” address, Woodward presented his vision for 2019, reiterating the need to continue to raise funds for “a badly needed elevator.”

“This evening we all heard the Installation declarations for each position made by our executive. I am honored to have another great executive; it helps make everything run smooth”, said Woodward.

“Our members are very special and at the last Dominion Convention it was a real concern that we work hard to maintain them.

“One step Dominion made was to offer up a free membership to the RCMP and military members.

“This year's mandate remains to raise funds for a badly needed elevator. We have a fantastic building which is the envy of many other branches in our zone but a building is nothing if your membership can't enjoy it. Each year it gets more evident with the ones that struggle to climb the stairs and the others that wish they could.

“Since we changed our bar license we have seen a fantastic savings. We have TGIF every Friday starting at 7 p.m. and encourage everyone to take advantage of it.

“We were honored to have the KamKids Daycare here promoting their fundraiser of Chase the Ace and they intend on coming back to TGIF in March.

“Bingo remains our main source of money and it helps keep the doors open but with this we need help; the same people can’t do all the work. Public relations through social media has given us a greater following in the community and this can only get better as we adjust to accept the benefits,” he said.

In May, the Legion will be presenting an Elvis Tribute, and Woodward encouraged people to buy tickets for the event.

“This year our branch is trying to organize a Safe Talk Certification course by a LivingWorks registered trainer,” he said.

“I believe we have made some very positive headway and I thank everyone who has stepped up to make things better already. Let's have another fantastic year,” he concluded.
