A Family Literacy Fun Night was held at Keeseekoose Chief’s Education Centre on November 28 organized by teacher Crystal Whitehawk in partnership with Carol Marriott, literacy coordinator with the Parkland Regional Library, Literacy Hub.

Over 40 students and families attended this evening of literacy fun for Grades 1 to 9. They participated in a variety of literacy games and activities, a nutritious snack, door prizes, and everyone went home with books for their families, said Marriott.

Family literacy refers to the learning that takes place within the family, according to the Saskatchewan Literacy Network (SLN.) This intergenerational learning includes parents, children, siblings, step-family, grandparents, caregivers, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbours, and others as identified by the family.

“Literacy learning starts early in life,” the SLN said. “Language learning is the foundation of literacy: talking, singing, rhyming, signing, playing, and book sharing all build language skills. Everyday life brings opportunities for learning that helps adults and children build relationships, gain skills, accomplish work, and participate fully in their communities.”
