Pelly rink tops Norquay Open Bonspiel

            The Ed Nelson rink of Pelly won the first event of the 18-rink Norquay Open Bonspiel held January 18 to 22.

            Curling with Nelson, who played third, were: Zack Newell, skip; Evan Rostotski, second, and Kenny Klimchuk, lead.

            Placing second, third and fourth respectively in the first event were: the Rick Kinaschuk rink of Benito; the Brad Knutson rink of Norquay and the Bob Lumley rink of Norquay.

            The Devin Sopal rink of Norquay, which included Sopal as skip, Vince Northrop as third, Jess Scott as second and Laura Sopal as lead, won the second event.

            Placing second, third and fourth respectively in the event were the Ken Newell rink of Norquay, Rick Nahnybida of Arran and Brian Hubic of Norquay.

            Topping the third event was the Lionel Hanson rink of Swan River. Jeremy Hrycenko of Arran was second in the third event; Peter Gazdewich of Norquay, third, and the Valley River Rats of Norquay, which was skipped by Richard Johnston, placed fourth.

            The Norquay women’s bonspiel is scheduled for the week of February 6, and the seniors’, the week of February 20.

            The Family Fun Night that has been held Thursdays beginning at 7 p.m. at the curling rink is being switched to Friday nights, said Ken Newell, a curling coach, adding that each week either he or another coach is at the rink, ready and able to teach people the sport of curling.

            Remember that the Family Fun Night includes the sale of delicious wings, Newell said.
