A provincial high school championship won this month is proof that the long shadow of a dedicated Kamsack coach is still being felt.
On March 11, the Carlyle high school boys team won the provincial senior boys high school curling championship and coaching that team was former Kamsack resident Brian Romaniuk, son of Don and Audrey Horkoff.
“Brian learned to curl in Kamsack and was coached by Ray Field and Tom Jordens in the 1980s,” Audrey said last week. The rink’s success is a testament to teachers who were very good.
On that championship rink was Romaniuk’s son Zach, who played third. He is also the grandson of Margaret and Gerald Boychuk, who farm south of Kamsack.
Audrey said that the curling success of her son and grandson is not unique among the students who learned to curl from Field and Jordens.
“Many good curlers developed from their instruction.”
Last year, former resident Michael Vereschagin’s son Shawn had won the provincial high school curling competition with his Saskatoon team. Michael had also been a student of Field and Jordens.
In fact, Michael had skipped the youngest team to ever go to the Northern Tankard, she said.
There’s quite a history of curling, all due to Field and Jordens, she said. “That’s quite an accomplishment.”
