Among the persons who were photographed enjoying themselves on skis and snowboards on the slopes of the Duck Mountain Ski Hill on the weekend, from left, were: Rei Dutchak of Canora, Eric Sandager of Preeceville, Ty Thomas of Kamsack, Mike Fernuik of Kamsack and Curtis McGriskin of Kamsack.

The best snow conditions of the winter were experienced by skiers and snowboarders at Duck Mountain Ski Hill on the weekend.

“Before last week’s snowfall we had estimated that there was only about eight inches of snow in the bushes, after the snowfall, there were 11 inches of snow in the open in front of the lodge and we were able to make a real fantastic base,” said Craig Brock, manager at the hill.

“They were all very excited to play in the powder,” Brock said. “We’ve been receiving lots of compliments.

“We had knee-deep powder, which is close to mountain skiing conditions.”

After having closed for two weeks because of the melting temperatures and bare patches on the runs, the hill opened on Saturday, following the blizzard that dropped snow on the area on March 7 and 8.

Brock said he opened the hill with the green lift, and then after issues with the red lift were fixed, it too was opened to gain access to all the runs at the hill.

“We’re looking forward to warm weather and will be having an excellent weekend this week,” he said. “We’re taking it one week at a time, but we’ll likely be able to be open on the following week as well.

If the hill is able to be open this weekend and next, that would make it the latest in the season that it has been open for years.
