Sierra Dahlin, who was nominated by Kaeley Kish, president of the Norquay Skate Club, has been named the recipient of the SaskEnergy Rising Star Award.

“Sierra has become a great asset to our small, newly re-established club in the past two seasons,” Kish said in her nomination. “She has shown a lot of interest and love for skating by rarely missing a lesson and completing multiple stages of CanSkate. With very little CanSkate experience she has really shown dedication and progressed easily through the stages.

“Not only has Sierra done well for herself in CanSkate, but she has also happily agreed to help the club by giving our coach a helping hand with our Pre-Can and Stage 1 kids,” Kish said. “She is their help up, their buddy and their encouragement.

“Sierra is well on her way to becoming an experienced PA (program assistant) and a hopeful certified coach. When I asked Sierra if she was liking helping out on the ice, I got that big smile and a definite, ‘yes.’

“Sierra has taken the initiative to volunteer her time to the club and still excels in her own lessons. Sierra is a perfect example of why I wanted to get skating back in the community: to give kids the opportunity to fall in the love with it and progress as far as their hearts desire.

“Sierra is well on her way and has the ability and determination to succeed through CanSkate, StarSkate and beyond,” Kish said. “We are proud to have her in our club and community: a star on the rise.”

“She has been so awesome helping the little guys; always smiling and willing to hold their hands,” said Rianna Westerlund, a parent.

“She is so helpful with the little kids. She always has a smile on her face. She truly tries to teach the kids skills and not just skating. Club is lucky to have her,” said Candice Salisbury, a parent.

“(She) always has a smile on her face and a positive attitude,” said Sandy Turta, a school librarian. “(She) works hard at whatever she does.”

“She is always smiling and willing to help out,” said Lindsay Peters, a teacher. “(She) never has anything bad to say about anyone.”

“Sierra…is an outstanding skater,” said Kayla Sheptak, a coach. “She always comes to lessons ready to learn with a positive attitude and enthused attitude. She is a joy to teach and work with. Sierra’s bubbly, happy attitude is always helpful and motivating towards the young Pre-Can skaters and always manages to put a smile on everybody’s face.

“Sierra is a go-getter girl excited about new things, and shows pride when she succeeds. Her help with the young skaters does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. This skater is an inspiration to the Norquay Skate Club.”

Sierra has been skating since she was two years old, said her mother Crystal Dahlin. This is her fifth year of figure skating.

She has been helping out with the beginner class and is loving it, her mother said. She would like to continue skating and get her coaching certificate.

“Sierra loves all sports,” she said adding that her daughter is involved in baseball, volleyball, badminton, curling, skiing, Ukrainian Dance and swimming.

“She is a very outdoorsy girl,” she said. “After school you can find her playing outside, summer and winter, even in minus 30-degree weather she is out playing.

“A teacher asked them in school a couple days ago who could live without electronics,” she said. Only Sierra and one other student had put up their hands.

“That makes me very proud,” her mother said.
