Norquay’s recreation activities discussed at monthly meeting

Dealing with correspondence members discussed the Sask Lotteries 2018 community grant application; the Sask Lotteries 2017 follow up forms which are to be distributed to groups to complete in March and April and are due by June 30; a Canada Revenue letter, and a Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation membership application and information on current programs.

            Discussing the Communiplex, Ruth Demetrick reported that the Communiplex skating ice is busy with recreation hockey, IP hockey, women’s hockey and figure skating. The door to the room for the ice resurfacing machine has been insulated.

            “We are receiving great turnouts for wing nights and we hope to see them continue,” Vaughan Demetrick said in his report of curling activities. He thanked all the sponsors and congratulated the Ed Nelson rink for winning the annual open bonspiel and the Deena Cherewyk rink of the women’s bonspiel. He said the seniors’ bonspiel was February 20 to 23 and the men’s March 14 to 19.

Regarding the walking club, Donna Lulashnyk said that there had been good turn out with the cold weather. The group meets at the Communiplex Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Discussing the Norquay School, Stacey Rubletz said that senior and junior drama rehearsals are continuing,  and ski trips were planned on March 10 and 23.

 Melissa Czornobay said that the Norquay soccer group will be having an organizational meeting in March.

Ken Newell passed around a revised version of the Canada 150 grant for all to look at.

Dana Nystedt said that the Ukrainian dance spring concert will be held April 9. Raffle prizes include a whole pork, cut and wrapped; $100 cash, and a Ukrainian feast in a cooler.

Speaking about the health auxiliary, Iris Nokinsky said that the palliative care room is complete. The secure area needs more planters, chairs, a waterfall, fire pit and awning, she said. A tentative date of July 7 has been set for the grand opening of the secure area.

Ruth Demetrick said that the Tail Twisters 4-H Club was planning its public speaking competitions on March 12 at the Covenant Church. Members are busy working on their projects, she said, adding that the animal trapping project will have Floyd Hendrickson, the education co-ordinator for the Saskatchewan Trapping Association, as a visitor and the international cuisine project is cooking Latin American food. The 4-H self-determine group is working on family trees, and archery is being held Mondays and Tuesdays at the Covenant Church.

Ashlee Shermet said that students of the Norquay Playschool have been visiting the lodge the first Tuesday of every month and the interaction between the residents and the children is amazing.

“We are looking forward to spring so we can have field trips to the fire station and the library,” Shermet said.

Regarding figure skating, Melissa Czornobay reported that practice is on Tuesdays and Fridays and the kitchen is open both days. The carnival was to have been held on March 5.

Reagan Foster reported that the senior band will be going to Edmonton May 10-14, and the junior band, to Moose Jaw May 18-20. There will be another fundraiser to help fund these trips, she said. Band students will be selling Drake Meats products which will be delivered before Easter.

The Parkland Music Festival will be held on March 25 in Sturgis and the band was to play at the Mini-Miracle in Sturgis, which is the community’s annual Telemiracle fundraiser.

Speaking about the Norquay Nighthawks hockey team, Bowdrie Northrop said that the team won the B side at Wadena.

Iris Nokinsky said that the Active Aging Group’s program is “just progressing wonderfully.

“We have approximately 20 participants,” Nokinsky said. “We have purchased 20 new bands which some of our grant will go toward, but the group might have to get some more if attendance keeps going up. Each person has his or her own band and it is put back in a Ziplock bag after exercise. That way everyone is always using his or her own band. The group is to continue to April 1.
