Kamsack snow removal work praised by council and residents

While the many piles of snow were still being removed from Kamsack streets and properties last week, praise was still being heaped on the equipment operators who had worked long hours during and after the blizzard of March 6, 7 and 8.

While the many piles of snow were still being removed from Kamsack streets and properties last week, praise was still being heaped on the equipment operators who had worked long hours during and after the blizzard of March 6, 7 and 8.

Clearing main street following the blizzard, workers had said that they had never seen that much snow accumulate, Mayor Nancy Brunt said last week.

The public works staff of eight was at work at 3:30 a.m. on March 7, 8 and 9, Brunt said. They worked multiple shifts and late into the evening.

In some places the snow was so deep that when the grader used its wing, the snow would fold over top of the wing, leaving high ridges, she said.

Public works was not able to do anything other than snow removal, she said, adding that a private contractor had contributed operators with a loader and two trucks one day, and a loader and truck the next day.

The grader ran 20 hours a day for the three days, she said.

The only issues from the storm are that some of the private contractors had been piling snow in inappropriate places, she said. The snow that was removed from the streets was placed at a dumpsite north of the road to the golf course and is now being placed east of the airport.

“Council wanted to remind residents to watch out for children who may be playing in the piles of snow,” she said. Sometimes a snow fort can collapse.

The public works crew is now at work digging out the storm channels and culverts again, she said.

Council has given a huge thanks to the public works crew and the residents for the patience, Brunt said.
