Kamsack participates in Saskatchewan in Motion initiatives to assure healthy and active residents

Efforts are underway at Kamsack to help assure that the community’s residents are healthy and active.

“Fewer than 15 per cent of Saskatchewan kids are getting the recommended 60 to 90 minutes of heart-pumping activity a day,” said Kev Sumner, Kamsack recreation director. “In Kamsack we would like to see the amount of time kids get to play outside increase.

“We all have a role to play in the solution by providing them with fantastic sports and recreational facilities and programs,” Sumner said. “We are very lucky in Kamsack because we have a great indoor rink, curling ice, ball diamonds, soccer fields and a walking trail.”

Saskatchewan in Motion, Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation District and the Kamsack in Motionteam are working together to make sure physical activity is an easy option for everyone, he said. “Join us on November 28 to explore ways to create a healthy, active community and develop realistic strategies to get more kids, more active, more often.”

A meeting is being held at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute at 3:30 p.m. on November 28, Sumner said. Further similar meetings are scheduled on December 7 at noon for students; at 3:45 p.m. at the seniors’ centre for seniors, and for other members of the community at the seniors’ centre at 6:30 p.m.

It is expected that following the meetings a community action profile will be developed which will become a valuable tool for such efforts as applying for funds.

“They say it takes a village to raise a child,” Sumner said. “That’s certainly true when it comes to getting kids moving more.”

This conversation is open to all interested individuals and organizations, he said, urging persons interested in participating to contact him at the recreation office.
