For his long service on a Manitoba fire department, a Kamsack man was presented with two medals last month.

Ed Yurkiw of Kamsack, who served on the Roblin Shell River Fire Department for 29 years, was presented with the Fire Services Exemplary Medal “in recognition of 20 years of loyal and exemplary service to public security in Canada.” The certificate accompanying the medal was signed by David Johnston, Governor General of Canada.

The other medal presented to Yurkiw on September 24 was the Fire Service Award presented by the Manitoba Association of Fire Chiefs “in recognition of 25 years of dedicated and loyal service in Manitoba.”

In the early 2000s, Yurkiw had been recognized by the fire chiefs’ association, which had presented him with the first of his three service medals.

Yurkiw, who has lived in Kamsack for 31 years and is an active supporter of the Power House Museum, was transferred from Dauphin to Roblin to take over duties at the Centra Gas depot in April 1971.

The two medals were presented to Yurkiw on September 24 by Tom Bowley, the Roblin fire chief and a representative of the Town of Roblin.
