A Kamsack man is among the 144 persons that were awarded the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal this month.

Barry Golay of Kamsack was at Sir Richard Lake Hall at Government House in Regina on October 18 when Lieut.-Gov. Vaughn Solomon Schofield presented the medal to him and other “outstanding individuals who have devoted 25 years or more to protecting the people of Saskatchewan.”

“It was enjoyable and interesting,” Golay said last week of the reception which had included a luncheon.

“It is a pleasure to acknowledge the men and women who have devoted their lives to keeping residents safe and protected,” said Nadine Wilson, the provincial secretary, who had accompanied Schofield at the ceremony.

“These everyday heroes can be found all across our province whenever we need them: preventing crime in our neighbourhoods, extinguishing fires in our communities, providing emergency medical care for our loved ones, offering compassion, and delivering countless services on which we all rely.”

This year, 144 of Saskatchewan’s longest-serving protectors will have received the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal, with three ceremonies: on October 18 at Government House in Regina and two ceremonies in Saskatoon on October 25, said a release from the provincial government.

The 2016 recipients include firefighters, police officers, corrections workers, Canadian Forces members, RCMP, conservation officers, deputy sheriffs, Canada Border Services Agency officers and emergency medical responders, it said.

The Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal was established in 2003 to recognize individuals with 25 years or more of exemplary service protecting Saskatchewan people or their property in either a volunteer or full-time capacity, the release said.  Including the 2016 recipients, 1,842 residents will have received this honour since the medal program began.
