KCI students scare away hunger on Halloween

In addition to mighty monsters, pretty princesses and funny faces that scoured the community on Halloween seeking out treats, a group of KCI students were involved with scaring hunger.

Members of the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute’s Free the Children group took on the project known as We Scare Hunger, and joined by about 10 members of the school’s football team, they canvassed the community from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. asking for non-perishable foods.

The food is being divided into several hampers which will be donated to families of KCI students, Julianna Raabel, a member of the group, said last week.

“We were divided into five groups and each group concentrated on a different part of town,” Raabel explained. “It was good to see everyone donating generously and happily. Events like this bring the community together.

This project is a good way to give back to the community, she said. So many people in the community support school groups, including the football team.

Raabel said that this was the second major assembling of food for donating to less-fortunate families. In September, five hampers of fresh food from the community garden were donated.

The group, along with the Student Leadership Council will be involved in another such drive this year when they seek food for the school’s annual Christmas hamper campaign.

The Christmas hampers will include frozen turkeys that will be purchased locally from proceeds from the fruits and cookie dough sale fundraiser that is being conducted.
