In time for the judging of Kamsack’s appearance in the 2017 Communities in Bloom competition, a group of Grade 9 students have painted a number of the community’s fire hydrants, changing normally staid structures into colourful and amusing objects d’art.
Bethany Brade’s Grade 9 art students at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute were asked this year to create works along a “taking action” theme.
“So this was an awesome opportunity to create art in the community,” Brade said. “The kids worked in groups to come up with designs and spent all day Friday painting.”
Kev Sumner, Kamsack’s recreation director, said that a grant of more than $600 had been received from Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation District which was used for supplies for students to paint some of the hydrants last year, and again this year. He also found money in his recreation budget for supplies.
The painting will go a long way towards the beautification of Kamsack and preparing for the 2017 Communities in Bloom, Sumner said.
The students who participated in the project are: Samantha Chernoff, Taylen Keshane, Liam Lachambre, Sadie McGriskin, Breanne McLean, Brooke Schwartz, Kade Wishnevetski, Zachary Zbeetnoff, Savannah Zielinkski, Josh Bielecki, Mila Carpenter-Bloudoff, Juanita Cote, Teyon Cote, Shaelyn David, Maison Davis, Carter Lippert, Ysabel Morenos, Whyatt Schneider and Aliyah Stevenson.
