Kamsack students working to fill Christmas hampers again

Once again as a pre-Christmas ritual, students of the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute are busy raising funds and encouraging residents to support them as they endeavour to fill several hampers with food that will be distributed to students’ families

Canvassing the KCI one afternoon last week were Santa Claus and two of his helpers (thanks to Shani Bear, Jesse Andrusiak and Chloe Irvine) who were encouraging students to purchase “candygrams” which is one of the ways students are being able to fill their Christmas hampers which will be taken to students’ families in need prior to Christmas.

Once again as a pre-Christmas ritual, students of the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute are busy raising funds and encouraging residents to support them as they endeavour to fill several hampers with food that will be distributed to students’ families in need of support.

The school’s annual Christmas hamper campaign has begun. Occurring for more than 25 years, the campaign urges residents to donated non-perishable food items, which will be divided into several hampers and then donated to families of students. Several fundraising projects being held concurrently will raise money that will be spent on fresh and perishable foods such as a turkey and vegetables that will be added to the hampers.

“Every year we are overwhelmed by donations we receive from community organizations, churches, businesses and individuals, including staff and students of the two Kamsack schools,” said information from the KCI. The KCI Student Leadership Council (SLC) shops for extra groceries using funds from the sale of candygrams and fruits.

Grade 7 students, along with some of the Victoria School students, are to be assembling the hampers during the last week of school before the Christmas break.

“This awesome tradition has grown and grown as has the need for foods security in our community,” the information said.

People wanting to donate are being asked to drop off the non-perishable food items at the KCI student lounge off the main entrance where a “train” was created to receive the goods.

From last week until the last day of school (December 21), a series of fun-oriented spirit days and activities are being planned, the information said. December 11 was to be red green day when students and staff were to be asked to dress in festive red and green clothing, while the grades 5 and 6 students were to be invited to decorate the sugar cookies that members of the SLC were to have baked.

On last Friday, and again this Friday, everyone is being encouraged to wear a Santa hat or elf ears or reindeer antlers for the day.

Today (December 14) the SLC was to host a holiday sweater day when sweaters will be judged in several different categories, including the ugliest, most creative and most “Christmassy.”

The last day of school is being called the Formal Day, when the holiday meal will be served and the annual alumni basketball game will be held with current basketball players meeting former Spartan students on the court.

The game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and all KCI alumni, of any age, are welcome to play, it said. Persons interested are asked to contact Glenda Tulloch at the school or by messge on Facebook.
