The Victoria School gymnasium was decorated with 150 small white crosses accented by red poppies for the Remembrance Day service in Kamsack when 43 wreathes were laid in honour of deceased veterans.
The crosses are in recognition of Canada’s 150th anniversary, said Jim Woodward, president of the Kamsack branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Shortly before 11 a.m. on November 11, the parade entered the hall with Robert Boudreau as parade marshall and sergeant-at-arms and Keri Lindsay on bagpipes. Following the arrival of the Colour Party, O Canada was performed by a Kamsack Comprehensive Institute band and Woodward recited the Honour Roll of war dead. Kyler Kitsch played The Last Post and Reveille.
As Legion padre, Rev. Stephen Ruten said the opening prayer and then Amazing Grace was sung, led by members of the Kamsack Community Choir.
A total of 43 wreathes were laid at the cenotaph positioned at the front of the hall and included representatives of families of veterans as well as government and district organizations and businesses.
The school band performed Time to Reflect and the choir sang One Wish.
Ruten read Iaiah 2:2-4 and Rev. Nancy Brunt read John 15:9-17, and then Rev. Warren Dungan presented the homily, comparing the sacrifices of immigrant ancestors to those of veterans.
The choir sang In Flanders Fields and Ruten presented a closing prayer.
God Save the Queen was performed by the school band and then Lindsay, as the piper led the march off of the Colours.
A Remembrance Day service was held at 2 p.m. in front of the cenotaph in Togo.
The day concluded with a supper at the Kamsack Legion Hall.
