A celebration was held at the Kamsack Power House Museum to commemorate “another good year for our beautiful museum” and to cut a cake for Canada 150.

A pancake breakfast kicked off the event at 9 a.m. and ran until 1 p.m.

Lydia Cherkas, Museum president, along with Museum board members and volunteers, were on hand to host this event at the Museum grounds in Centennial Park on September 3.

Cherkas welcomed everyone to the celebration, and thanked the meat department of the Kamsack Co-op Food Store for providing two baskets full of meat products that were available to be won as door prizes. There were also tickets available for a 50/50 draw.

Board members expressed relief that the rain which had threatened earlier in the morning had dissipated, leaving behind sunshine, allowing for those who were in attendance to stroll about from building to building to observe the many displays that are indoors and out.

Peter Cherkas, Museum board member, was available to chat about the new items on display at the Museum as well as physical improvements that have been made to the buildings.

“We were able to finish putting in all new doors to the Northern Petroleum Corporation (NPC) building and on the northwest side of the Museum,” said Cherkas.

“We also have our new mannequins set up as part of our displays in the main Museum building and in the one-room schoolhouse, and we are very proud of our mannequin on display with the RCMP uniform.

“Annie Morinos of Kamsack has lent us several items for a temporary display to depict the history of the Philippines,” he said.

Musical entertainment was provided by Colleen Kazakoff, accompanied by Rick Chernoff on guitar.

Lawrence Kazakoff, Colleen’s husband, provided some entertainment as well when he shared several humourous “stories” with the audience during breaks in the music.

“We are going to conclude our performance with the song This Land is My Land, which I think is appropriate because it is Canada’s 150th birthday, and I am going to finish the song in the Ukrainian language,” said Kazakoff, which she then did.

A large cake which was dedicated to Canada’s 150th birthday was brought out and served with ice cream to everyone in attendance.

Bill Matthew of Kamsack won the 50/50 draw. Betty Toporowski and Madeline Buenneke, of Yorkton, were both winners of the door prizes.
