The Kamsack Dance Club held its second annual dance recital, titled “Legendary”, on April 7.

There were 42 dancers of various ages who performed 20 dance numbers in total during the evening performance held in the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute gymnasium.

Ages of the performers ranged from four to high school graduation, and were grouped in pre-primary, primary, intermediate and senior levels.

Brittainy Spence is the driving force behind the Kamsack Dance Club, which has been in existence for two years.

“I grew up dancing, and performed in my first recital at age 3, in Fort Francis, Ont., and dance became my passion,” said Spence.

“I attended the School of Contemporary Dancers in Winnipeg, and then taught at my home studio in Fort Francis for two years, alongside my mentor. I learned a lot about the business angle from that experience.

“When I moved to Kamsack in 2016 I realized there was a void in the area, and I opened my dance studio here in October of 2016. The response has been fantastic,” she said.

The dance season begins in September, usually following the school calendar. The first six weeks are spent on review and dance technique fundamentals. The last eight weeks are spent working on the recital.

“Choosing the music and costumes are my favorite part,” said Spence. “We do measurements and send the order to a company in St. Louis, Mo.

“The music is chosen to suit the dance recital theme, which, this year, was “Legendary”. It is a creative process to find costumes and music that are suitably age appropriate for each dance group,” she said.

The competitive contemporary dance group performed the last number in the dance recital to Let  it Be. The six members of this group are Keanna Romaniuk, Jordyn Thomas, Elizabeth Hilderman, Rylee Zbeetnoff, Tara Taylor and Melody Lin. They were to perform seven dance numbers in the Parkland Dance Festival held in Yorkton April 20 to 22.
